June 15th, 2021 - Sport and Sustainability International held its Extraordinary General Assembly on June 12th, 2021. The virtual event gave opportunity to around 40 Members present to gain deeper insights into SandSI’s developments over the last six months, since newly appointed Secretary General Philippe Duperrex took office. In addition to approving the revised Statutes and Code of Conduct, the Assembly unanimously elected Orsolya Tolnay as a new Member of the Board of Directors.

The organization has closed an intensive first half of the year with the delivery of many tangible assets and benefits for SandSI’s Membership base,  which has been growing with prestigious names and organizations in recent months. To date, SandSI has 260 Members representing 47 countries worldwide. Looking ahead, SandSI faces challenging months with a number of  ambitious projects and initiatives set for the second half of the year. Working in collaboration with strategic partners, these initiatives are expected to deliver many enhanced tools, benefits and expertise for SandSI Members.

Tremendous work will also be done to ensure SandSI's presence and participation on prestigious international summits, culminating with the COP26 in Glasgow in November. These high profile events will provide an international platform for SandSI to drive awareness about the important role sport can play to help fight the greatest climate issues the world is facing today.

During the Assembly, Members also voted to improve the organization’s Statutes and Code of Conduct. "The revised Statutes and approved Code of Conduct ensure higher standards on good governance for SandSI and its members," stated Ingrid Beutler, Member of the Board of Directors. The revised Statutes, among others, ensure that the Board of Directors is diverse, non-discriminatory and equitable, notably by electing at least one-third women as members. Another novelty that enforces better governance is the fact that members who are elected to the Board of Directors by the General Assembly serve for three (3) years and are eligible for re-election for a maximum of three (3) terms.

“Keeping in line with the objectives we’ve outlined for SandSI, we are delighted to welcome Orsolya Tolnay as our newest Member of the Board of Directors,” said SandSI President Julia Pallé. “Orsolya is a sport policy expert with more than a decade of experience specializing in social impact through sport. Orsolya has also acquired expertise in European sports advocacy and EU-funded project management, and we look forward to her contribution in the years to come.”

SandSI thanks all Members for their ongoing support and looks forward to gathering again at the next General Assembly planned for the end of 2021. Until then, Members are invited to follow and share in the sport and sustainability conversation via  SandSI’s social media channels, as well as sign up to the monthly Newsletter for recent news and updates!
